Back in the mid-1980's I investigated the possibility of doing an inter-disciplinary masters in Research Methodology at the University of Manitoba. It struck me that with all the disciplines doing different approaches, one could put a composite degree together looking at the "interest area" of methodology itself, just as one could do with any other subject. I was advised against it, as it was thought to be unachievable. Now there is just such a degree in England at Bedford , and many similar programs are springing up in other Universities as well. The drive for it in England is a drive from funding agencies to increase the success rate of funded Ph.D. students after three fully funded years of research, and a desire to increase the quality of research being done. Bedford's degree arose out of the need for upgrading of their teaching of research methods within the interdisciplinary degree candidates.
