“Grace Towards Justice” (Romans 5:20-21) [Reflections on Watchman Nee's Book Changed Into His Likeness; Spanish Jerusalem Bible Series - Romans 6-8 sub series]

In common speech and songs we sing,
’Tis grace, which coping-strength will bring
Into are messed up lives out here –
God carries us – “Footprints” makes clear.

But in Paul’s convoluted text,
I hear one part, unlike what rest
Of us would like (first glance, at least) –
That grace helps us to justice meet.

And justice brings eternal life
In life of Jesus, Lord – for right
Is what we long for deep within,
Out here in tumbled life we’re in.

We do not want to just survive,
To be last one who’s still alive;
We want our day of justice too –
When we’ve been hit by “Likes of you”.

Some say that judgment would suffice,
But we’re aware that sometimes vice
Is what’s behind condemning words;
Or OJ’s freed when pay-back’s heard.

The Spanish phrase, en virtude de
(In virtue of) has more to say
Than I had heard in English phrase –
For potency their word conveys.

That is, “It is effective towards”,
With overtones beyond their words –
The reign of grace, where it’s a fact,
Rebelliousness from God’s a tact –

That Satan has persuaded man
(And woman) life new options can
Be had for taking – grace is there
Abundantly – because God cares.

And, “Grace towards Justice” (what God gives) –
Speaks to us here, where Satan lives
And reigns as leader of the pack –
“Steal, kill, destroy” describes his tact.

So when there’s theft, let justice reign;
Where death, let justice come again;
Where life’s, destroyed, as in Job’s case,
Let justice come to human race.

So “Reign of grace” that way inclines,
Writes Paul, who’s thoughts enlighten mine;
He’s right – for justice would be nice –
And “Judgment” (only) won’t suffice.

Thanks Lord for this.
