“A Place To Stand” (Eccl.4:4-5; 2:24) [“Reflections On Adam Smith's Book An Inquiry Into The Nature And Causes Of The Wealth Of Nations Indianapolis : Liberty Classics, 1981 (Vol.I and II) Book 1, - General]

“All toil and skill in toil”, he says,
“Come from man’s envy” – so it pays
To want, says Adam Smith back then,
As he the world would comprehend.

For status in one’s neighbor’s eyes
Keeps folks in line, for they despise
The folks who cross some fancied line –
“Stay with the herd, you’ll make out fine”.

That’s one extreme, to which he adds,
‘Fold hands and sit’ is just as bad –
For if you do, you’ll eat your flesh
(That’s “Capital” to Smith), and yet –

My brother, John, saw one line here
Two, twenty-four, he marked, so clear
It would be; quickly he could find
To guide his way, and clear his mind –

A gift from God is threefold way –
To eat, and drink, as Christ would say,
“Our daily bread, in all its types
Keeps one alive – keep balance right”.

Enjoy your toil, the tasks you do;
Each has a role, both old and new,
For us to fill our lives each day –
Enjoy your toil, as living way.

“I came that you might find fulfilled
Your joy in life – for that’s God’s will,
That you find peace and happiness –
On Kingdom-layer, your life is blessed.”

“A gift from God” – good place to start –
To eat and drink as we take part
In life – find joy in toil in each day
Work out from there, to learn Christ’s way.

Okay Lord, thanks for this.
