“Celestial Socket” ( ) [Reflections on Robert Law's Book, The Tests of Life - A Study Of The First Epistle Of John Edinburgh, T&T Clark, 1909, Chapter 4]
Stick your finger in a socket and two things will happen fast –
You will feel the unseen power, and a spark of light will flash;
Light and life, first two with Jesus, but effect is much the same –
Light will bathe you in God’s glory – show your world as ever changed.God is sheds light upon your living like a candle in the night;
Shines because it is its nature if its wick you will unite
That’s because it is God’s nature to shine brightly all around;
In the universal darkness, light shines on without a sound.Life’s like that, it moves the living, leaves the scene when we pass on;
Though it also is quite silent, when it’s there it bursts to song;
That’s God’s gift, for He’s the giver and the gift – He does not leave;
Like a branch that draws its life-blood we’re attached to sacred tree.Light and life – two tests John holds out in his day, and here for us
Are we lighted? Are we living – midst the world’s deep shadowed muss?
We can claim that nature’s in us, but as John goes on to show,
Look more closely at what happens to the world-scene when you go.Does life flow from God the Father into you then out the door
Into those whose lives you’re touching, do they hunger for some more?
Does God’s light shine through your living like a candle in the breeze,
Pushing back encircling darkness, leaving dimness when you leave?Light and life two aspects glorious of the Father of all life;
When we plug into that socket world is changed to day from night;
Just like Lazarus, Christ’s buddy, four long days within the tomb
There’s a world that should be living, lighted up amidst the gloom.At the first God’s words were uttered, bringing life to all around;
After Wisdom came the light, for in the Father life is found;
So too here in deepest darkness, chaos pooling ’round our feet,
Spirit hovers, bringing order – life springs up as God we meet.Thanks Lord for this.
