“Working From The Overflow” [Reflection On Lortie Sermon, Sept. 8/19 - What We Believe About The Bible] (1Cor. 15:24-28)
I found it interesting – he said (aside),
“Expository” he prefers, besides,
It keeps The Book before us, not just him;
So in this way new series he begins.In series he reflects on “Our Beliefs” –
Once drawn from Scripture, then to us released
Into this listing of what we have come
To claim as ours – well, really, “Dad and Mom’s”.It’s like in politics, the way we vote
Has more to do with parents – we take note
Of how they do their lives, then we conform –
“Good thing it’s into truth that I was born!”That preaches well, but I prefer to start
From where we’re born, then slowly take our part
In life, engaging all the panoply
Of resource – “Scripture, prayer, activity”.An “Educated clergy” I was shown
Was better way to venture from our home;
Thus, labor is divided – they dig in
And hermeneutic-ventures thus begin.They share their insights weekly, plus some more;
Which brings us to his caution – is the store
Of insight lived out? Gotten from some book?
Too “Green” in silo? Needs a second look?I found “Gestation” was, for me, the way –
I worked ahead on Scripture every day;
Took notes, then put them in the “Stu-ing” pot,
To cook in life (let lesser aspects rot).I get excited, run off at the mouth
(The way I learn – get feedback from my spouse
And others as I go about my life;
Then best-of-mix emerges, shedding light).The insights from the past do float our boats,
Down small canals to ocean, where they float;
They’re fitted out for ocean’s vast expanse –
We all start somewhere in life’s great romance.So “Educated clergy” bring to light
For one and all fresh insights in the fight
Christ carries on with satan, ’till Christ wins,
And death is gone for all, just like our sins.For we’re Christ’s body, He works out through us
What He deems best amidst the daily fuss;
Our guidance – Scripture, prayer, experience –
Informs our actions – offense or defense.For me, I tend to work from overflow –
Gestation’s barrel lets subconscious show,
Not now, but later, insight that has “Cooked”
A while, with time to take a second look.What of this series? It’s a place to start –
It’s parents’ insights, good as we embark
On ocean-voyage for which we’ve prepared –
Our venture into life that’s many-layered.He said, like sponge, he’s soaked up quite a bit;
At feet of mentors he has learned to sit;
In life he’s started on his journey bold;
Invites us to the “Best of life” take hold –But also to engage the Scripture-tome
In terms of work, and school, and in our homes,
As we set out post-Christmas with the fleet
And see what Dragon-monsters we’ll there meet.Thanks Lord for this.
