“Photo-Application” [Reflections On Michael Freeman's Book 35mm Handbook Philadelphia: Courage Books, 1980 - section 2 intro]
“Design”, he claims, is at the end,
Where our control of pictures blends
Into a larger sphere of life –
“Control” that’s exercised with light.At first, the pix of our delight
Need low control to come out right;
Like wildlife in a petting zoo,
Compared to blinds which boost our view.The studio gives sets of tools
One third the way through time in school;
The darkroom is a second jump
Two thirds through learning’s wave – a bump –Up into much more structured pix,
Where preps and setups precede clicks
Of camera – then comes design –
Augmented-text in which I find –A host of applications rise
To satisfy some reader’s eyes;
So much to ponder – this guy’s book
Gives me a map to take a look –At filling out the gaps today
Of one’s performance, in a way
Which has a flow, completes the sweep
Of learning photo-process sweet.“Creative choice” comes at the end
Of learning process, as it blends
From no control, to what’s in view,
To strong technique in all we do.Lord, this bears looking at again,
Lest photo-work remain the same
As done before – a logic here,
Helps me make sense – it was not clear.Thanks Lord for this.
