“Tone” [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - #96]

In thirties it was pix alone;
In fifties, headline found a home;
In seventies they went berserk
With multi-headlines – nothing worked.

A fashion-rag used tabloid ways
To ground their cover’s flaky days;
To speak to earth’s reality,
Not dreamers’ flights of fantasy.

So covers got a dose of text;
Much better if that gets arrest;
Use “Tone” as guide to cover art –
News? Fantasy? or “Hope impart”?

Say, “Gritty”, “Manly”, “Quality”,
Or, “Craftsmanship”, with headline plea
To “Pick me up and satisfy
Peaked interest now I’ve caught your eye”.

Interior could also use
Techniques like that – let readers choose
What they would like to further read;
Pictures and text – let each one breathe.

Thanks Lord for this.
