“Movement” [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - #87]

We’ve always walked on trails we make ahead;
Not us, perhaps, like Romans long since dead;
We like to go, then come home in a while;
Shop-keepers know this, cater to this style.

Our mental movements also have their trails,
As thought persists and status-quo prevails;
Shop-keepers of the mental-spirit type,
Aware of this, work well in edgy site.

Peripheral it might be, but it works –
With actors’ stars in sidewalks – fame now lurks
Where people cast their gazes down to view
The actors’ names – to see whose name is new.

Along a roadway, one word at a time
Adorns a string of fence posts in a line;
Read rapidly, as cars go ripping by,
Says, “Ice cream just ahead – stop in and buy”.

Graffiti sprayed in haste on walls and trains
Before policemen come, augment the gains
Of artists with their graphic slogan themes –
“Make rapid change in way of life”, it means.

Some use convention for a double-take –
A contra-message, super-meanings make
When juxtaposed with rebel message thought,
Or artifice where main-stream themes are taught.

One graphic artist, Spanish, would “deface”
His posters with a message in some space
Unused to make commercial message clear,
So readers, to make sense, would come quite near.

We are so curious – in black and white
“Peripheral” alerts to fight or flight;
Small movements in the edge-lines of our sight
Have extra impact – dark’s encroaching light.

Thanks Lord for this.
