“The Commons” [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - #97]

The Commons, once for all the town,
Evaporated, Crofts torn down,
As sheep invaded fenced-in land
Which Russian peasants understand.

Now, corporations invade space
(Our eyes once played on scenes that graced
Both rural and the urban view),
With adverts pushing all things new.

Now digital has raised the bar
From wrapping ads around the car,
To notes spray-painted on the walks,
“New undies buy”, in obscene squawks.

As revenues for ads spread out,
Low budget gimmicks, without doubt,
Are rising fast to claim their space
In race for grabbing highest place.

So “Commons” is a problem now;
No place where we can “Be” – somehow
Unless we own some space like “Home”,
Or “Shop” – or publish film or tome.

For digi-world is “Commons” now
For global village – ’cept somehow
It’s all behind a paywall – crap!
How is it we’d not foreseen that.

Thanks Lord for this.
