“Iconic Art” [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - #86]

Iconic art like Abbey Road
On record covers often told
The buyer of the theme inside
The record sleeve – though short its ride.

The year of start of World War II
Saw a record covers come as new;
They peaked when CD’s hit the scene;
Now all is MP3s, and streams.

But, as I kid I well recall
Craft-paper sleeves there were – that’s all –
And precious were those few we had –
Old seventy-eights – now seems quite sad.

Things brightened up – as Christmas gifts,
We played, replayed, those teenage riffs;
Top-forty carried albums large,
And forty-fives in stacks like cards.

Before CDs came tape machines –
Eight-tracks, cassettes, reel-players, seen
By some of us; then digi-sound;
With analog no more around.

I had forgotten ’bout those sleeves
Of Kraft, in days when Marg, Louise,
Crossed over to their teenage years
Of record albums, joys, and tears.

One role of graphic arts I see,
Is bringing back those memories
Of bitter-sweet in teenage years –
First jobs; young love; new adult fears.

Thanks Lord for this.
