“To A Whole New Level” [Spanish Bible Series] (Matthew 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20)

In marking in transition points today,
And analyzing what translators say,
I noticed once again “ser” and “estar” –
Forced choice that made me think “One can go far”.

For at the point of call (Mark chapter 1),
Interpreter shows two who have become
The friends of Jesus (living by the beach);
First “estar” uses (now I’ll use to teach) –

We’re all like that – we putter in our craft;
Fix up our nets; and cast about; for that
Is what one does – “Take up the task at hand” –
Here, “estar” says it’s temporary stand.

Then Jesus comes and chats with us at toil,
’Till He suggests we “Leave the sea for soil”
For He can get us there – as “ser” – to be –
No easy change from that state, we will see.

In this case, “I will make you out to be
Fishers of men” – which raises thought for me –
Am I still “estar” (being), in my craft
Like these two, putzing ’round from fore to aft?

Or has Christ made me solidly to be
His person, standing forth for all to see
His handiwork, wrought high in quality,
That in the end we’ll show its “ser” – to be?

Thanks Lord for this.
