“Not Just A Blush” (Luke 14:7-11) [Spanish Jerusalem Bible Series]

That ser again – slow change at best –
When Jesus came, at host’s behest,
Then noticed folks who fought for seats –
He spoke – suggested, “Don’t repeat –

“Such silliness; for listen up –
The humble ones of plate and cup,
Are called to rise, while powerful
Slide their way down – not wonderful.”

In Spanish Bible it’s quite clear –
Our attitudes, which we hold dear,
Are slow to change – if change at all
Takes place in us – both great and small.

’Till now I’d heard in story there,
“Quick blush – in time we’d quick repair
Our status to the gallery”;
Not Christ, for into depths He sees.

He’s right – our snobbery is set
In years of doling out a peck
To those a notch or two below
Our status – just so all would know –

“I’m Ozymandias”, like poem;
Look on my status, spouse, and home;
Come on, admit – when I sit down,
It’s at the head, where Christ is found.

But Christ’s not there – He’s on the cross,
Ensuring canceled sin, at cost
Of everything – so basin take,
And with a towel some service make.

Lord this is true-to-life for me –
So hard it is for me to see
The arrogance I show these days;
Please lift it off, show better ways.

Thanks Lord for this.
