"Photo-Play"  [Gross and Shapiro - Tao Of Photography - Reflections - Sec. 2:1] (John 14:6)

Because folks see our photos as the real,
Or “real-in-base”, like legends of the past,
Our scope for challenge to assumptions held
Is marvelous, potential-filled, and vast.

Photographers first play with what they see,
Interpreting what’s found – what it might mean;
With digital our arsenal of tricks
Helps us translate each scene, if mind is keen.

The viewer also has a hand in this
Translation process – with subjective mind –
For photos bridge what’s called humanities
With social-science, as in both it finds –

Some aspects of the truth the other can’t
Encompass, drawing meanings from the scene,
While pouring meanings on “reality” –
It’s interactive – “photo, scene, and me”.

A photo’s “viewing-context” and its “use”
Affects the way a viewer understands
What’s been depicted, just as cultures too,
Bring base-assumptions held in viewer’s hand.

So all “interpretations” by these folks,
Are slices of reality in fact,
Which limit larger life when viewed as whole –
A fun and useful limitation-act.

All this invites us in to join the fun
Of re-presenting life – new ways to see
Our world when we depart from smaller views –
Share what is seen, yet let each viewer be –

Themselves – as they observe our products fair;
Augmented text as well (when words appear
With pix) – encourage them to let their minds
Find interest in the mundane – truth made clear.

Perhaps that’s partly why we like to take
And make our photographs, and show
Them to the world through photo sites each day –
So we can give-and-take – and know –

How we and others view our world each day;
Communication-base in all we do;
Constructing meanings on reality,
Then re-presenting other parts of truth.

Thanks Lord for this.
