Ubiquitous (Proverbs 30:24-28)

The Bible is a precious book,
A Journal of a group who took
Two thousand years to get the point
God had when thinking up this joint.

Not written in this land of snow
And ice – where we in summers know
The coolness of the lakes and trees,
And goldenrod which makes us sneeze.

But rather, ’neath the desert sun
Like Arizona – not much fun
When summer comes to roast one’s toes,
Though winter’s better, goodness knows!

Now Solomon, a wise old King,
Collected sayings, songs to sing;
His dad, King David, won some wars –
Made a Solomon quite rich, of course.

The sayings (Proverbs) he wrote down,
Three thousand were – a few are found –
But one concerns the lizard’s life,
Which insight brings to present light.

It seems one lizard living there,
Kids captured in their hands – compare
To us as kids – frog-chasing days
In early summer – childhood’s ways.

But lizard was ubiquitous
(That’s “all around” to those of us
Who’ve never heard that word – like me),
Just sweep the floor, and one you’d see.

“Can’t keep them out of house”, wife says,
“I try my best, but such are ways
Of lizards in this land of sand;
It drives me nuts – for I can’t stand –

“To have them in my pretty house
(Though better than a skunk or mouse) –
Could keep them in my hands as child;
Can’t keep them out – which drives me wild.”

Now Solomon heard that complaint;
Said, “Ah! A proverb’s there – quite quaint –
For that’s like truth some wise man knows –
You lock him in – he no more goes –

“About – just like our childish hands
Which held one in – for power can;
But truth is quite ubiquitous –
Can’t keep it out – it comes to us.”
