A Term Unused [Module #26] (Matthew 7-10:4; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16)
A term unused, it seems, by John,
“Apostle” – “also called”, then gone
From daily use (synoptic voice),
Which says to me we have a choice. For John, he calls himself a friend,
A servant, or disciple, then
Synoptics’ “Son of Thunder” quip
(Aside, but that’s the end of it).So Paul’s the one who picks it up,
Along with others – says, be tough
With those who like Apostle term –
With basics stick, and basics learn. To me it speaks of strategy
Christ Jesus had, which now we see
Could be a model for our work,
As we cross culture-lines – assert –Whatever Christ’s assigned us to,
But keep the focus, “use to you”;
Not status, power, position high,
But function ours before we die.I notice also John played out
The role of elder – makes me doubt
The role, “Apostle” was for life –
More “functional”, fits context right. It says to me, “Pick up a term
Which works for you – its function learn –
Then work it out as faithfully
As God will give you grace to see”.Thanks Lord, for this.
