Beware or be-aware he claims,
That history’s objective aim,
Is not what’s here presented now,
But story from an end-point, how –

The Jewish-Catholic journey – walked
Two thousand years while neither talked
Or listened to each other’s ways,
But fought their phantoms all their days.

Assured as well, is choice of act,
With consequence as folks react,
And then new choices, not some fate,
Played out until the Shoah’s date.

So, story told is from that stance –
The cross at Auschwitz – and the dance
He sees that led up to that day,
Far more than Hitler and his ways.

He notes as well that RC folks
Will feel the weight of history’s yoke,
But cautions readers Protestant
That Shoah’s theirs to some extent –

For in the land where Luther walked
Was where “catastrophe” was brought
Into the light of day – the West
Is what’s revealed – its worst and best.
