Farm Boy – What Keith's Life Says To Me
“When I arrived here on this earth (or ‘in it’ I should say,
For we’re a part of all of this, I’ve known it since that day),
I found it mixed – quite hard to live, and getting-on quite tough –
Though smart I was, good-natured too – but gentle to its rough.“ ‘Compassionate’ I guess I’d say – the wayward, and the lost,
The hurt and dying, tugged my heart, though helping had its cost;
I loved the woodlands, birds and flowers, and pictured them a bit,
As I would peer into their depths, or in their midst I’d sit.I loved to read like teacher-types, and curious I was –
When I was puzzled ’bout some thing I had to find its cause;
Pat-answers weren’t for me at all; nor cookie-cutter ways –
I much preferred to cut my trail, and did so all my days.Not much for that religious stuff, I felt it missed the point –
First Nation folks were closer to the truth – that I’d anoint;
In them I felt a kindred heart, so when I found their tools
From ancient times out in my field, I thought, ‘We’re being fools –“ ‘They’ve been here on this land for years, for centuries – how long
’Till we have trashed this land of ours in ways quite plainly wrong?
Our footprint (boot-print) in the soil, is heavy, as it’s large;
Our ways quite unsustainable as through its peace we barge.’“I’ve had my life; I’ve done my best, to live, let live, and be
A part of all I’ve come to know, so now, just like the seed
I liked to clean as spring approached, the good amongst the bad,
Please brush aside my rougher parts – hear gentle more than sad.“ I thank you all, my kith and kin, for walking here with me;
Not always easy I can see, but you’ve each helped me be
Much better than I might have been without your faithful ways,
As we’ve traversed this wilderness from start to parting days.”Thanks folks –
Keith
