Charlie’s Word

Hey Charlie – there, you did it one more time –
From mouths of babes you brought His Word sublime –
“There’s monsters still beneath our nightly beds,
But need not be – in Christ they all have fled”.

Ah yes! Solutions we keep to ourselves,
Those superstitious ways we trick the elves
And goblins we know lurk the room, while sleep
Protects us, feet tucked snugly ’neath the sheets.

“Think back”, you said, “to when you were quite small;
Your first awareness – fear – of some, not all
The things beneath your bed there in the night;
Your heart and head quite separate in that fight.

“Now ask yourself if Jesus is still there –
And if there’s anything you’d like to share
Of what’s between His presence and your life –
No? That’s correct He’s driven back the night.”

I’m sure there’s some who think such childish ways
Are gone for all us adults – but there stays
Within our hearts those memories of yore,
Which come to us once darkness comes once more.

Why, take the task that’s given me these days –
To other folks it’s nothing – “Preacher says
The things he hears God laying on his heart –
He stands up, speaks up, shuts up – thinks he’s smart.”

But they don’t get temptations’ subtle ways;
How quiet pressure colors all he says,
Or can – so Charlie, those were words of grace,
Which hold me safe as monster-fears I face.

“In Christ you are much bigger than your thought”,
You said – “and you’ve resources sages long have sought;
A daily part of life here every day,
If you, in Christ, will constant choose to stay”.

Thanks Charlie.
