The Homesteader’s Prayer
Way-hey-hey! They asked me back!
Now what am I to think of that?
Not every time that happens, eh?
But what the heck – I said okay.The 29th? Why sure, that’s good;
Twixt Yule and New Year’s – understood –
I’ll read that sermon – fake it was –
From Davis book – it’s good because –I set it in their church in days
When Arthur, George, came here and stayed
With cousin Ada – grand-ma-ma,
And went to church in whether a raw. It’s fictional, you understand,
But plays a role – my pen in hand
To carry truth, not be the truth –
We’ll re-create beneath their roof –Events within their old church – now
One hundred years, and yet somehow
As fresh today at this New Year’s
As Arthur’s hopes and Arthur’s fears.I thank you, Lord, for this fine chance
To share with folks, by happenstance?
Your word ’fore New Year’s 1912,
Experienced by Arthur – then not well –But full of hope and courage he,
At start of decade of his need
For cure to come for his disease,
And life he lived – the world to feed. Thanks Lord.
