The Homesteader’s Prayer

Way-hey-hey! They asked me back!
Now what am I to think of that?
Not every time that happens, eh?
But what the heck – I said okay.

The 29th? Why sure, that’s good;
Twixt Yule and New Year’s – understood –
I’ll read that sermon – fake it was –
From Davis book – it’s good because –

I set it in their church in days
When Arthur, George, came here and stayed
With cousin Ada – grand-ma-ma,
And went to church in whether a raw.

It’s fictional, you understand,
But plays a role – my pen in hand
To carry truth, not be the truth –
We’ll re-create beneath their roof –

Events within their old church – now
One hundred years, and yet somehow
As fresh today at this New Year’s
As Arthur’s hopes and Arthur’s fears.

I thank you, Lord, for this fine chance
To share with folks, by happenstance?
Your word ’fore New Year’s 1912,
Experienced by Arthur – then not well –

But full of hope and courage he,
At start of decade of his need
For cure to come for his disease,
And life he lived – the world to feed.

Thanks Lord.
