Farewell, My Friend

It seems you knew the end was near;
“Heroic measures”, it was clear
Were really not for you, my friend –
For you, ’twas best to face the end.

’Twas us who could not see the truth,
So shift you took to other route
Was hard for us to hear – but now
I see more clearly that somehow –

You knew – and that’s ok, I guess,
For in the end I see you blessed
Us with your game-face to the end –
So fast it seemed – amazed, I send –

This note expressing my surprise –
You knew – it’s now before our eyes –
You blessed us to the very end –
And bought us time – as road now bends –

Away from life in common walk,
With joyous times, shared common talk –
It’s over – you have peace at last;
You persevered once die was cast.

Friend Margaret, thanks for that fine gift –
The way at end you gave a lift
To us – as we must carry on
And sadness tints ongoing song.

Thanks for your friendship; laughing smile;
Thanks for support through trouble’s hour;
Thanks for your courage through despair;
Thanks for your simply being there.

Farewell, my friend;
Safe journey.
