The New Door
Today the new front door will be installed;
The man will come, and when the old is hauled
Away and new front entrance-way is set,
Will wedge the door-jam – do his very best.Today, as well, I get my five-year test –
My cancer check-up done – I’ll not forget
That Fraser at this point set clock again,
To walk five years of treatment with its pain.The pain I’ve found is inside – how we feel –
The physical is tough, but soon will yield
It’s good results as doctors ply their trade,
Blessed by the actions which the docs have made.Anxiety is tough to comprehend,
Unless we’re in the space where we must mend,
And then it’s facing us – we face the foe,
And onward through to cancer-land we go.How well I now recall those moments low,
When I through hell and back was forced to go;
Some good indeed emerged throughout the walk,
Like poetry – new way for me to talk.Lord, thanks – whatever news I hear today;
For wisdom others shared along the way;
For people I have met whose journeys rough
Had different outcomes – loads more than enough.One said, “Don’t let them get your humor, Stu”
Another, “Anger’s energy – it’s you
Who must decide, and act to throw it out
At target – do not let it lurk about”.Then Tanis who encouraged us to feel;
Express what’s deep inside, let artwork heal
Those deep emotions, present from our past;
With lightened load, take freedom road at last.That book with nuggets two – “What have you now
The courage to fulfill, you can allow
Yourself to do, you feared too much before
Your diagnostic news came through your door?”And, “Not to let the world of cancer wring
More out of you, then you of it – but bring
To daily grind of treatment-days this chance
To face yourself, and life – in both advance”.For friends, supporters, those who opened doors;
For those who showed the way, taught me their course
Of skills, or ways to move on in my life,
And grow together through this time of strife.I do not know just when this trail will end,
Or how much longer ’till it takes a bend;
But, Lord, I thank You for approaching light
Of dawn today, and end to cancer’s night.Thanks.
