Five Years Clear

“Five years clear’s ” a kind of varnish,
Making wood look very nice;
Keeps the wind and rain from rotting
Planks beneath – it does suffice.

“Five years clear” is what they tell me
Is the battle we have won;
Colon cancer has been beaten,
Follow-ups are now all done.

But there’s prostate, and skin cancer,
Lung and liver, pancreas;
Battle won is just a portion,
’Till we leave this earth at last.

We’ve polluted all our rivers,
Air we breathe, and food we eat;
Chemicals – we love to use them –
Kills the pain and makes life sweet.

But we’re drowning in the sewage,
What a mess we live within,
Covered up with five-year varnish,
Faking good with what’s just sin.

When as kids within our sandbox
We threw gravel in the air,
When we stopped it still fell on us,
Some still do it playing there.

Genie’s now out of the bottle,
There’s no chance to put it back;
So the news, “You’ve won the battle” –
Though it’s true, war’s still a fact.
