That Smart

I clear recall that day back when
That smart I was, but now and then
I ran afoul of such great thought,
And changed my ways as living ought.

Like joke about, “No kids I had,
But seven theories – oh so glad
To share them far and wide with folks,
On how to raise their kids – no joke!

“But then I got seven kids to raise,
No theories left (may God be praised!) –
As each displayed variety,
I changed to face reality.”

So too with life – it simple seems
When we are young, but in between
Our youth and growing old with grace,
A change or two in us takes place.

Then we too smile along with youth
As they wise-up, grow long in tooth,
And trade their energy for smarts,
And smile with us as wisdom starts.
