Right Hand of ‘Got’ (Romans 8:34)

In Greek the hand that’s right for us
Is that which gets, without a fuss,
Or striving, thrusting, fighting for,
Just gets – full measure – so much more.

The culture here is not like that –
Right hand is that which, like a rat
Will sell its friend for thirty quid,
Then rises quick to make a bid.

It is the hand which wields the sword;
The hand behind which gossip’s word
Is whispered – hand which jots a note
To seize advantage; scape some goat.

But here it’s hard to give and get;
At God’s right hand Christ sits, and yet
A picture dim emerges here
For me, though in my head not clear –

For “getting” glory – Christ attained,
Accepted death, on route remained
Despite the perils of that road;
His mission done, he took that load –

And for his part, The Father “got”
A saving task – our freedom bought;
So from, and with right hand – both ways –
That symbol stands and richly pays.
