Payments

The problem with a payment is one has to careful be;
It signifies a transfer of some rights with shift of fee;
But people think that they can put in meanings which they choose,
Or own the other person, claim triumphantly, “You lose!”

I’m not the only one who has to struggle with that fact;
It’s rampant here (and elsewhere) you can see it as they act;
I hunch it’s rooted in the way the others act to them,
Which they repeat as normal fare – then “Here we go again”.

That’s not the way that things are done in culture of my birth
(In Echoland that is, of course, when there’s exchange of worth);
They have their problems there, I know, but that’s not what I mean,
There is another way to live, I know because I’ve seen –

It as a way of doing life, it’s not this tit-for-tat;
It’s not a case of “ownership” or leveraging each act
It’s not tied up in social life, or co-dependent fare,
But it is used support to give, and showing that we care.

The Jews were first to figure out that money could be cut,
To let it circulate quite free as gift, and nothing but;
That “Tithes set free” give God some room to operate each day,
So we’d be free to breathe ourselves in work and school and play.
