Market Based Approaches to Local Economic Development
Theory at the community level of economic development tends to reflect the approach ones takes to the various tasks outlined in the intro page to this section more than specifying which activities are options. Emphasis will be placed on one or another of the options depending on circumstances outlook, but the actual activity options are more or less the same.
Some Economic Development Officers use a market-based approach rather than the "Political Economy" approcch. That is, they use the "Orthodox" approach referred to elsewhere, tend to assume that the "unseen hand" of economics in the marketplace works automatically, (with a certain amount of government involement to curb its excesses or re-distribute the benefits, for some of these workers). Therefore their involvements tend to be oriented more towards trying to support, retain and initiate business ventures as such. Some may be involved in educational and labor development (of "human capital"), but their real focus is in the business sector as such, because for them, business is the engine that drives the local economy. Many sites on the Internet reflect this focus whe they list "Tools for Economic Development" used by their communities These lists tend to be high on loan and funding arrangements for new businesses.
The links below list some sites that relate to market oriented approaches to Community Economic Development.
