Separatism as an Approach to Local Economic Development

Separatism is usually a last resort for local economic development, and usually arises from extreme frustration with failed efforts to develop economically, usually due to unrelated reasons. In effect people using this approach wish to form their own growth machine but have been hampered in some way. Some sections of cities have tried to do this in the United States when African-Americans have had little assistance in Economic development but have found themselves taxed with no return.

First Nations groups have maintained this stance from the time of settlement, but in this case it is based on a different set of assumptions. Their claim is based on their rights as independent nations who moved into treaty relationship with the Canadian Nation about the time it was founded. The nature of these relationships are just now becoming formalized, hopefully with better results than our initial set of ill-defined relationships.
