Role of Education and Training in Local Economic Development

Education and Training are the two central aspects of this approach to local Economic Development. Definitions vary for each of these two terms, but generally they refer to upgrading of general capacity and understanding (education) and applied skills (training).

Two further aspects of this subject can loom so large for some practitioners, that they become sub-types of local economic development in them selves.

The first is the matter of "skills Mismatch", which refers to the problem of insufficient skills among the present workforce for addressing the coming "brave new world" with its high skill level demands.

The second is the matter of "equity" issues, relating to the differentials in access to new jobs facing various individuals owing to "disenfranchisement" for one reason or another. I.e. Education and training opportunities are not equally available to all members of our society.

These approaches to economic development can have a long, medium or short time horizon, depending on a number of factors. Practitioners locused in educational centers tend towards the long term, those in training centers tend toward the medium term, and those locused in the business world tend towards the short term horizon.
