“Step Back” [reflection on anecdote #1402 of Edmund Fuller’s Book 2500 Anecdotes for All Occasions – series] ( )
He said, “Step back” again, again;
To actor, he directed pain;
“Once more and I’ll go off the stage”;
“Indeed” he said, and flipped the page.So too with us as we step forth,
In frozen land we call the North;
Get pushy in a group not ours,
And “Wham!” We feel directly, powers –We had not sensed were in the play,
Descending quickly, no delay –
“Please take your leave, we wish you’d do
‘Exit, stage right’ – that’s telling you –“As clearly as we can, young man;
If you can’t sense the herd, you can
Evaporate – we can’t use you –
So take your leave – don’t play the fool.”Of course, that is compassion’s plea,
Articulated, as you’ll see
Repeatedly, if close you’ll look,
By spokesman type – “Your goose is cooked”.’Course they’re the ones (“Just us”, they claim),
Whose long-term prospects are quite lame,
For they emote quite well indeed,
But other parts of body need.And to me? I need them also, Sam –
For “Sensitive” is part they can
Bring to a situation – rare
Indeed such folks, who show us care.The social-side of life is swell;
Without it, doing life is hell;
But ways of such compassion-types
Are indirect – “avoiding fights”.Thanks Lord for this.
