“Status Quo Casts A Spell” [War – Sub Series Number One – Reflections on Timothy Snyder’s Book, On Tyranny – Poem #8 – Chapter 8]

All my days on planet earth have been
Filled with messages, with me far less than keen
To take on some evil’s slimy way;
Giving in, when doing so would pay.

In this chapter great and small of scope,
Jump to life – “It’s time that we awoke;
See encroachment on our liberty;
We sit back say ‘What will be will be’”

Churchill and some high school girl of note,
Took on Hitler, to that threat each spoke,
Not so much with words as with their acts –
“Local living” midst horrendous facts.

Polish people fought, the Britts joined in;
Yanks attended also – empires bring
Allies to the field, but often not –
Status quo’s inertia, spell had bought.

Just like days of Gideon of old –
’Till his brother’s trouble, we are told,
Kept his head down, let marauders win;
“Mighty man of God” did not begin –

’Till it hit him – God pulled sleeper play
To the forefront of that hopeless day;
So it is with left with lust for power,
Cloaked in darkness at this very hour.

Snyder’s message is quite right – “Stand out!”
With your acts and words; there’s little doubt
You’ll bring trouble on your head quite soon –
Friends and allies pulling back, make room.

’Till it hits them – when some mirrored act,
Shows them who they are, reveals the fact
They are cowed by hopelessness – like fire
We’d have doused with buckets as desired –

But the adults said it hopeless was;
Kids backed off – I chafed that day, because,
Firefighter said, “You could have won
If you’d kept it up; so, too bad, son”.

It has taken years to grow to here,
Setting my inertia and my fear
To one side, that good might have its day;
Thank You, Lord, for Kingdom-layer’s way.

Thanks Lord for this.
