“Fundamentals” [War – Sub Series Number One – Reflections on Timothy Snyder’s Book, On Tyranny – Poem #6 – Chapter 5]

A “Manual” formed basis for
The UCC – procedures more
In line with harsh realities
Of Prairie life for you and me.

Three starting-churches almost crashed
As all became quite short of cash,
So local unions led into
A UCC – concept not new –

But national the shift became;
Some others joined, a blending game;
Some members said, “Where I get off –
It’s not for me”, remainder scoffed.

’Twas always subject to the clique
As War-Lords seized some fiefdom’s seat,
And for a time made living hell
For those “Outside”, as heads would swell.

So current aspects are not new,
Just different – but, what such do
Is what this guy says always goes –
The rule-book’s trashed so no one knows –

How differences are sorted out;
What common object they’re about;
Abuse for those non-party types
In cloak of darkness – subtle fights.

The fundamentals all agreed
As basis for their common need,
Was labeled “Fundamentalist” –
Procedure theirs – and quite unjust.

The leaders (unprofessional),
Did not abuse to others tell,
But stood aside with “Stevens” stoned,
And statue-genuflecting honed.

Well, Lord, this sickens me to think
How great things were, how fast they sink,
As clique drains off long years’ resource
To satisfy their needs, of course.

Too bad – for such a time as this
Could use their input (they insist
That their agenda trumps each ace
Played out as evil makes its case).

Lord, I don’t want to dwell on this;
As righteous folks they now insist
That Trump and “Low-life’s” of his clan
Are evil specimens of man.

But they can’t see (can we at all?)
They’re evil too – such since the fall;
For “Knowing right and wrong” plays out
As “You’re all wrong, without a doubt”.

Thanks Lord for this.
