“Import(ant) Oil” [Canadian Economy series #A-2 – Energy]

Imported oil; important oil;
Imported chapter cuts the toil
Of author on this subject fair,
When other authors must prepare.

Too bad – I find it barely fits,
As chapter to this subject sits
On real estate within this text
Reserved for parts which are the best.

An overview I’ll grant you that,
But little fits – it comes off flat,
For it had birth in other scene;
Not much adapting has there been.

Oil comes from West; is used in East;
It swaps a lot (that’s stood the test
Of time) – West sells to South and draws
From eastern pools with pipelined straws.

The power-grid is self-contained;
In provinces it has remained,
Though in the larger scheme of things,
The continent does power thing.

So little need, or chance there’ll be
A power-based economy;
We use a lot (it’s cold up here);
Not near our markets – that’s quite clear.

The act we call the “BNA”
Has based fed-province interplay –
The feds export; province the rest;
Our piecemeal rules are not the best.

The feds use tax (most corporate),
While prov’s use royalties to rake
In what they can – world prices now;
Most integrated (up) allows –

Rough fit to global-market world;
One tenth the US size and swirl
Of GNP, but locked in step;
New alternates have not come yet.

The Chinese press to be the first
To get the alternates – then burst
Into the future – lead the pack;
Of interest that strategic tack.

In end it all comes from the sun –
A tiny fraction gets things done
Here on this earth – such energy
Exceeds all use, most people see.

Thanks Lord for this.
