“The Period” [language series]

The period is just a dot,
But all the potency it’s got
Evaporates in spoken word,
For “Part of speech” it’s not – I heard –

“Eight parts of speech there are” (or nine –
As some would count), both ways are fine;
For punctuation was not ’round
For writing down our spoken sound.

But even in the “parts” which speak
Of aspects of our language – seek
To understand what’s meant by each,
And you’ll find it’s beyond your reach –

For language isn’t ours, it’s God’s;
A thought which to my mind seems odd;
But, given to us way back when,
God kept it too – to message send.

He knew we would not heed Him much,
But also knew our lives He’d touch
In ways beyond our wildest ken,
When He would to His children send –

His love our way – each period
Of life we lived, mis-understood;
If we would hurry-up and stop,
Perhaps we’d hear what He has taught –

Humanity down through the years
Of periods of trials, and tears;
Of triumphs with, without His grace;
Of Kingdom-life midst human race.

Lord, punctuation does so much,
Like – “Take a breath at comma’s touch
Upon a string of words we speak –
Perhaps you’ll hear the stop you seek.”

Thanks Lord for this.
