“Shall We Sing First?”

“Are we first going to sing?” I heard her ask,
As a Nicholas prepared to end his day;
“For what?” I asked, “Why birthday song, of course –
For seventy soon comes along your way.”

Oh yes – that cursed day which brings to mind
How few’s the years remaining in our lives;
At least those uninhibited by age,
When youthful vigor lifts us from our dives.

But then I found what other elders know,
I’m sure, as they go through this silken veil –
That generations rising in our midst,
Help ease transitions as our stature fails.

For golf reminded me, “This cannot last” –
Frustrating as it is, the die is cast –
It has been since the first day – once conceived,
We mix with what we’ve got, what’s been believed.

Lord, thanks for gift of children, grand-kids, wife;
For times of rest, mixed in with normal life;
I pray for grace to be the one You had
In mind back at the first – may all be glad –

I came their way, in You, and in Your name;
That after that point they were not the same;
That when the end of life for each one comes,
They ask, “Shall we first sing? It’s been such fun!”

Thanks Lord for this.
