“All Other Ground” (Matt.16:13-20)
Time was I thought it metaphor she spoke
Of “Solid rock” and “Sinking sand” in smoke;
But now I sense what she was singing of –
“Marshmallow-quagmire hard to stay above”.For when I step out into solid way,
Mirage it is, it works about a day
And then I break once more into the mush
Beneath the surface, making walking rough.I saw it first in church – how can this be?
They throw away the gift You’ve given, can’t see
“Life’s Spirit first, and all the rest adds on”,
So live inversed and wonder what went wrong.Then world of business, finance, enterprise –
There’s mythic nonsense held before our eyes!
It’s money, power, honed to systemic point;
Two-edged sword, which unseen king anoints.Then University, the T-R world of froth –
Cerebral witches drawn to flame like moths;
Pedantic nonsense, entertaining stuff;
Beneath venir, dry rot and fluff.So what is “real” if solid is the base
Of world I crave, ’neath optimistic face?
That’s what hymn-writer’s speaking of –
“Christ – solid rock – that Kingdom-layer of love”.Thanks Lord for this.
