“But That's Not What's Going On” [Reflection On Book The Price Of Everything]
It’s Veblen’s book which shows the way –
Our market ways from yesterday
Provide the larger framework scheme,
Which obfuscates what can be seen.So yes, what’s here is right on track;
But actions’ more what’s seen out back
As business enterprise is used
To milk the cow – price is abused.For in the past, just like he says,
Price is a function – what each pays
To have, or have it go away;
Trade-off? How other options play.We do our best to figure out
What price we’ll pay, or thereabout;
But stepping back, a larger game
Affects all else – “All else the same” –For corporations big and small
Can shake the scene – not good at all
Except for captains at the top
Who make their cash when markets rock –And sway like in an earthquake zone;
Except these folks, with the dark-side honed,
Can make an earthquake on demand,
And turn what’s solid into sand.But no one talks of larger scene –
It’s where the action’s truly seen,
But what the heck, cry, “Yesterday
Is what we do”, hide earthquake’s way.Thanks Lord for this.
