“The Underclass” [Reflections On Book The Canadian Economy Series B-3 - Welfare]
The underclass (where most will be
In thirty years) it seems to me,
Are mostly viewed as parasites
By rich (who think if they did things right). But that’s illusion – lots of ways
Are clearly seen in myth that says
“You too can win the lottery,
And if you do, your life will be –“Much better, so, suck up this crap,
And do three jobs – or, failing that,
A business start (deduction’s great
For loss sustained at any rate)”.Taxation plans claw back excess
To “general”, so poor get less,
But never see the funds regained;
Thus cost appears to be the pain. The boomers age, 10K per day
Pass sixty-five, and then they pay
For myth they held (Of “Golden Years”)
Which is, in fact, “Old persons’ tears”.Our women squeezed from home to work?
No better off – we got to work
And mopped up excess cash in play –
Two work where one once earned same pay.The land-claims from the victory
(First Nations, Inuit, Métis)
Aren’t settled, not much stomach there
For “Past events” which claim low care.We have some myths we tell ourselves,
But ship our jobs elsewhere, then sell
The cheaper goods back here – no pay
For funds to buy them any-way.For change has come, will carry on –
The Britts’ and Yanks’ big guns are gone,
Or will be soon – our share of pie
Is dropping – one-third ’fore I die.Lord, as we shift to under-class
In Canada, and pay at last
For arrogance and forceful days,
Help us engage and change our ways. Thanks Lord for this.
