"Paneled"  [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - # 57]

It’s panel that’s at the center of
The comic-strips we know,
As storyline flows ’cross the page
Transports us from the snow –

To Tropic jungle of Tarzan,
Or Disney’s favored climes;
Wild West of Annie Oakley fame,
Or Future-Woman’s times.

For in between each cryptic scene
A slender strip of white,
Says “Contrast this with this, my friend,
And you will see the light”.

A “Storyboard” smoothes out the moves,
A camera-action-plan;
But panels of a comic strip,
Shifts any way it can.

Zooms in extremely, then pulls back,
Establishing some scene;
“Ka-Pow!” Grotesque the faces get,
For hero is quite keen –

To show us how things get cleaned up
In Gotham City now;
We too could fix the mess we have –
Our hero shows us how.

For graphic-arts “Contrast” now makes
A line like gutter white,
Though smooth as silk book cover is,
Gap’s there – just out of sight.

Thanks Lord for this.
