"Cathedrals" [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - # 48]
When the masons strove to change the look
Of thanks to God in stone, it took
Invention of the buttress to
Allow the space where light comes through.“I’m flying” – graceful arches sang;
Triangulated in design,
Each piece with countervailing weight
Held up the rest, and carried freight.So too in graphic layout’s seen,
Triangulated form has been
The basis of such solidness,
While leaving also airiness.Each piece, like flying buttresses,
As Russia rebuilt muss that is,
Result of inner tumult war,
“Constructivist”, like stone before.So too as we press on today –
As graphic artists we can play
With buttressed concepts from the past;
Let balanced life rise up at last.Thanks Lord for this.
