"Demographic Shifts" [Reflections On Book  The Canadian Economy Series  B-1 - Education]

Its demographics, can’t you see?
“What education means to me
Is chance to move along in life;
Raise children, educate, with wife”

The demographic change ’round here
In rural scene, is made quite clear
By rural church where I once preached –
No longer used – museum piece –

And all around the fields are bare –
No people live in district there;
Kids bus to school; school-board’s widespread;
Communities too small, are dead.

Class size, and special needs, with skills
Developed, centrally soon fills
The office with supportive staff,
And unions, specialties, and craft.

Post-secondary is a boost;
Redistribution is the root
Of resource – benefits abound
In far-flung Canada, we’ve found.

A shift took place in sixty-six,
A decade after Sputnik’s fix
To attitudes of bygone days –
Worked for a while – now income says –

Return on inputs are not here;
Our tax-rates have become quite dear,
So maybe we must shift the way
We educate – so outputs pay.

Thanks Lord for this.
