"Those Squiggley Lines Which Decorate"[Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - # 12]

Those squiggly lines which decorate,
If used (abused) just for their sake,
Can clutter – vines which needs be pruned
To give us air and breathing room.

Kaleidoscopic, changing form
Can tie, unite, convey some norm
Within a series – changed, yet same;
Symbolic subtext hypes the game.

Some styles have retro-look as well,
So subtle layer says it well –
“It’s like the good in good old days,
So by me now – my content pays”.

Again, as layered-meanings hide
Within designs where they reside,
Cartoons hold this with tiny print
Which closer look reveals, through hint –

There being yet another way
To hear the message artists say
Through innuendo, subtext, puns,
And archetypes where culture runs.

How rich tradition is for all –
Absorbed as toddlers most of all,
As we discover larger worlds,
And prep ourselves for nature’s whirl.

Lord, symbol has a place in faith;
Abused at times, but there’s a case
Which can be made – Your will made known
In culture’s base which each calls “home”.

Thanks Lord for this.
