“The Company”
I grew up in “The Company”, unseen
To me – I thought “Community” had been
The place where I’d begun my days on earth,
Like others I had met here since my birth.But no – “Third Culture Kids” are who we are,
And no-one mentions that – for me, so far,
I spent ten years or so, somewhat aware
Third-culture kid I’ve been – in which I’m heir –To two or three expressions of the past,
Admixed to a concoction built to last
(Like all third-cultures, and each unity,
They do their time for each of us, then flee).For now you see it, now you don’t – with age
We build upon each base, then turn the page;
For those who grow up in our families
Will build on base we’ve spoken, brought to be.The “Company” (slows down this cultured shift),
Still sings the Christmas Carols which we’ve missed;
Adopts more slowly changes to the form
Of cultured-life around, with shifting norms.The danger comes at end of working life
Within The Company – that’s where the strife
Is greatest – old and young face off – “That’s weird!”
Each say to other ones – comes change as feared.Thanks Lord for this.
