“To A Degree” (end of college – chapter 9?)
“To a degree” – term we use,
Means, “Just a bit”; “Not much to lose”,
“I’d walk away; leave it behind;
It’s not the door I have in mind”.That’s why I burned paper that day –
“Lest I be lured there by the pay”;
Burned bridges help – baptism’s role –
Helps us press on, heaven as goal.“Fricassee Fryers” laughed at their terms,
Part of their charge – glad that I burned
Their parch-meant dear – shackles released;
Angels in jail, prisoners release.Folks think that tools need to upgrade –
Forearm tattoo, easily made;
Better by far implant in skin –
Scan as you go – terror begins.What’s a degree? Status and cast;
Racially pure? Filtered at last;
DNA stream? Mayflower’s boys;
Those at the shore? Smallpox destroys.Not much has changed – lions await;
Circus and bread, passives create;
Money and power; world and its ways;
Some linger free; slavery pays;Socially stamped we can progress;
Bigger the guns, less we’re oppressed;
Service the fringe? Dangerous game;
Creds for the task? Power’s in “Name”.Lord, we’re all nuts – Adam and Eve,
Story’s so true – garden we leave;
Kingdom as layer, place we can grow;
Internet soup – so much to know.Creds that I burned, freedom to gain,
Use to me now? Some has remained;
What was the cost? Nothing up here –
On Kingdom layer – nothing to fear.Death has transpired, not up ahead;
Baptism’s role? Bury the dead;
Raised to new life on Kingdom-layer;
To what degree? New life of prayer.What of the world – value to you?
Place I have learned, much like a school –
Challenge to me? Beauty unseen;
Entrance exams – tell where I’ve been.Lord, what of this? “Silliness still –
Scrambled ascent, top of some hill –
Truly absurd, die to new life
Winning that hill costs you your life.”Where to from here? No one can see;
Where each has been, shapes what is “me”;
Future is past; present our biz;
Pictured – at once, history it is.Thanks Lord for this.
