"The Natue Of A Photograph " [Photographic Communication #7] [Photo Index # 3: 7 [Community Contribution Set Of Poems]

Each art-form has a “nature”, has an “essence” on its own;
To harness it to say your piece, and skills related hone
Is, of itself quite eloquent, but nothing like the layer
As place to live your life out photographing life as prayer.

For essence is not “substance”, rather, “absence” in a pix
(To some at least – but it will serve to show it does exist);
A slice in time, split-second, captures essence on the run,
But time then passes, moment’s gone, and photo’s captured fun.

Our photo captures building like the barn which grandpa built –
Not used today, a Quonset hut is good – no cows to milk;
Then it’s torn down, just stone remains, foundation of the past;
Our photo’s essence is “it’s gone” with grandpa’s farm, alas.

The notion of good “still life” pix is, “what’s outside the frame?”
Just hints are seen within the pix, beg questions like, who came
And left their gloves, and hat, with bloody knife there on the floor?
And urge in us to look beyond the frame – we long for “more”.

A photo takes a “click” of time to capture this or that;
But what if click delayed one milli-second in the past?
We’d see the murder happen, different puzzle then results,
Like, “Why is this now happening between these two adults?

Alf Hitchcock used the “essence” of this “absence” it would seem –
Kept horror out of camera range – dark footsteps and a scream;
He knew that we would conjure greater horrors in our minds,
Than he could quite depict, or any symbol he could find.

So once you think of “essence” of this art-form, you will see
Its potency to carry thought, your message then will be
Much better understood by people you would reach today –
“Communication theory” opens up such artful ways.

Thanks Lord for this.
