“The Workaround” (1 Samuel: Ch. 8-12)

“Give us a king like others now,
So we can be like them somehow;”
Said Sam, “That’s not the way to go,
For God is King for us, you know”

But folks pressed on and got their way,
And went off track anointing day;
Then God worked out a “workaround”,
Right there on Promised Holy Ground.

First Saul, then David, Solomon;
A host of smaller men, each one
Not rising even to the height
Of David, ’till they lost their fight –

With neighbors – some to exile went,
And then returned, where once were tents
Set up in Zion’s rubbled ruins,
Rebuilt their templed-walls quite soon.

They stumbled on, God’s workaround
Some found, and walked His Kingdom ground,
’Till John and Jesus spoke their word,
“God’s Kingdom’s here – now you’ve all heard –

“Go out to other nations now,
And let them know what, why, and how
To enter into Kingdom layer;
Be freed, in Me, as Kingdom-players.”

And so they came ’cross culture’s walls,
Upon this layer great and small,
Until today chance came to me
To clamber on, start life that’s free.

Lord God, You did a “workaround”
From time those folks on holy ground,
Chose Kings from earth for earthly life,
And bought such kingdoms’ silly strife –

Instead of hearing what You said
Through Samuel, prophets long since dead –
“My Kingdom-vision’s from the first –
Two trees in garden – you chose worst.

“But still the Kingdom option’s here –
The choice, like Eden, is quite clear –
Opt in, climb on, join Kingdom-layer
As place to stand as Kingdom players”.

Lord, I’d not seen this gift of Yours –
A plastic wall – life’s not a chore,
But freedom’s here – since Eden’s day;
It’s here for all – for all today.

Thanks Lord for this.
