“Drop Sheet”

And then the Kingdom layer dropped so slow,
At first I hardly noticed, but I know
As it became so thin and yet so tough,
It dropped and covered all the world – enough –

To separate me from its grim affairs;
Quite pliable, you’d think it was not there;
It took the shape of items down below,
Like shrink-wrapped-plastic packaging we know.

Still farther did that plastic layer drop,
And cover everything, and those who walk
The streets where once I lived a life sublime –
But now I see it all beneath the slime.

So maybe it’s like story’s parallel;
A time-warp into heaven more than hell;
Two people in a world, a layer between
I know it’s there, but to that one unseen.

So who’s restricted, who on earth is free?
In my case, I’m not there, I see it’s me –
That micro-carbon-plastic layered look
Is there between us, like a storybook.

So slowly, Lord, you drop that Kingdom layer,
And let me slowly grasp each aspect there;
No wonder I had not that layer seen,
But now I sense it lies here in between –

The world and Kingdom of our God and King;
We’re “in” not “of” the world, and here we sing
Your praises, freed in life of Jubilee –
With plastic layer between – in which we’re free.

The layer’s on the world, it’s not on us;
Like kids beneath a blanket, there’s no fuss
Or bother once we leave that world enwrapped,
To join Thy Kingdom-life no longer trapped.

What are the implications for this walk
Of freedom, in You, Christ, for thought and talk?
The same life, yet it’s different having stepped
Through “wardrobe”, “time-warp”, “parallel”, to get –

Out from restrictive life that’s labeled “free”,
Yet trapped it is, huge blockages we see –
“Don’t touch; don’t speak; don’t rise above like kites,
Which catch the wind, for all submit to might –

Of those who seize such power as they can find,
Suck up resources, people, cash, and kind –
Play God – disperse – so “benefactors” are –
To lord it over others near and far.

But freedom in You, Lord, lets them exist,
For Kingdom-life on this side is quite fixed –
Live and let live, the layer’s not on me;
It’s on the world, on this side life is free.

Thanks Lord for this.
