“One” [Module #306] (Matthew 22:29; Mark 12:24)
When I attended camp one year
To learn the ropes of leading, clear
To me as mud was one small group –
“Integrity” – some sort of soup?When we are kids sometimes big words
Are new to us – we’ve never heard
Them used, so we must ask around –
“Oh that!” We say when answer’s found.To integrate parts of our past;
To integrate ourselves at last;
To integrate our social selves;
To integrate amidst some hell.I can’t recall what teacher said
As he through issues small group led;
I do recall the girl I liked –
Long walks on shore at coming night.And I recall the tone out there –
How love of God had us prepared
For leading in our local crew,
And tips for tasks to us quite new.Perhaps the pine trees, rocks, and shore
Helped bring to mind the blessed North
As I with southern youth parlayed
Our pasts into the paths God laid.For North and South quite different are,
And though by map-line North was far,
Inside my heart and spirit lay
Strong roots, for I was TCK.Took decades there to integrate,
And yet, O Lord, You said You’d wait;
And wait You did, and helped me too,
Through years of life, and work, and school.None of us ever are quite whole;
As body-part we come to know
A taste of excellence; but then,
Reminded are, “Life’s better when –“We integrate with other blokes,
And work as body-parts with folks
Quite different from our strength – they bring
The parts we lack – one’s everything.Thanks Lord for this.
