“What Road?” [Module # 221] (Luke 17:26-38)
What Road have you in life, my friend?
And do you like where it will end?
Not “like”, so much as “Is there life
At end of road, despite the strife?”We change our life-priorities
Not quickly (though we often breeze
Through lighter choices left and right),
But ploddingly – and that’s all right –For sudden deeper change each day,
Disrupts the folks with whom we stay
And do our living with – “Oh say –
Who are you deeply, Dad, today?”So, when the end-time comes with force,
We’ll be consistent, our resource
Will carry us, no new will sweep
Into our consciousness and keep –Us in a way we’ve never been,
With Angels’ help we’ve never seen,
Or grace to drop priorities
As call is heard, “Come up here, please”.And so it was for me back then –
“What role in life? Where should I bend
My shoulder to the wheel, O God?”
I’d asked – response was rather odd.But as I look back to that time,
I was sincere; commitment mine
Was genuine, but lacked the depth
Maturity would bring to it.But as the years ticked slow away,
He brought me to this present day;
And challenges much greater than
The ones before, made me this man.Be careful what you ask in life,
And guide you choose – “Turn left, or right”;
For roads lead on to roads and ways,
And take you forward days on days –Until you’re here – some choice confronts
Your very being – all at once
You have a choice – “All in? Today?”
Then you respond your current way.I find now Andrew Murray’s stuff
Assists me when the way gets tough –
“Are you in this with Me, My friend?
Can I on missions safely send –“You as you are – are you mature?
Or are you caught in life’s allure?
Two ways I deal with folks below –
It’s interactive life, you know.First way – I give, and you accept,
Despite the fact there’s nothing yet
That you have said or done to ask
That I provide such given task.“The second way – you ask of Me,
Something, and ask it willingly;
That is, you wish to be involved
In getting it, ’till problem’s solved.“And so It was, in fact, that night –
You asked I show which road was right;
I did – with ‘pause’ and ‘Go’ and ‘shove’;
You heard, responded to My love.“And now I’ve got you here – at start
Of venture – not an easy part
But one life-giving, as you asked
That week, that night, far in the past.”Lord, as I said last night to him,
Transitions, though in end we win
Are spooky – past we know quite well,
But future’s shape we cannot tell.Although we guess, we cannot see
What’s up ahead, how life will be;
The only thing for sure I know,
“Let go of life, to life you’ll go.”For if we hold to what we’ve got,
Possessions, family, the lot,
We squeeze the life from what we love –
Best trust them to our God above.For His they are, not ours, no way –
His wisdom guides them on each day;
When actions, words are from us asked
By Him – we give – life works at last.What would my choice have been back then?
What task would I’ve my life’s strength lend,
If I had Andrew Murray’s words
As part of life as I had heard –Them, built into my life by then?
Don’t know; can’t say; but then again,
I have them now, ’bout active will,
And gifts I can accept – here, still.Thanks Lord for this.
