"The Potentials In Sonship" [1st John series] (1st John 2:29-3:3; Matt. 5:8-9)

My guess is John had sons himself,
So pulled this image off the shelf
To speak quite clearly as he wrote,
To make his point to some old bloke.

But me? I’m quite reversed these days –
Got into work with son – this lays
A larger vision for our task;
Back-engineered – it’s clear at last.

For John (in Gospel, letter too),
Says sons grow up, do what dads do;
Acceptance as a son of ours
Gives way to transfer father’s powers.

It’s not that sonship says, “I’m great!”
It more enables, if we wait
For growth to come as both mature;
Someday, like Father we’ll be pure.

So here, it seems some had it wrong –
Saw sonship as “I now belong”,
Without component of such change
Deep in our hearts thus rearranged.

So, having come here, entered in,
Like Christ at Christmas – “let’s begin
To be like God, with Me within –
You’ll grow in grace, move far from sin”.

Thanks Lord for this.
