"How Peter Knew" [John - Core Series] (John 13:21-38; Isaiah 50:10-11)

I had not noticed in this piece of text
‘Twas Peter who had asked the one by Jesus – next
At table, “Who He means will soon betray
Christ Jesus as this night flows into day?”

And that is why the next thing Jesus says,
With Judas on his way, gone to betray –
“You will also fall away, you’re not immune
To running off to save your skin real soon”.

’Course Peter protests, “Me? Forbid it, Lord,
I’ll hang with you – of that I pledged my word”.
“Come on, old Peter, give your head a shake;
I know your heart as well – you’ll Me forsake”.

But here, the sopping morsel Jesus passed
To Judas – at that moment die was cast,
For Judas played along with subterfuge –
That moment Satan knew he could be used.

Up to that point he could have walked away
From plot, but demons past he then obeyed;
Those things which we encounter as a child,
Play out in us as adults’ antics wild.

So deal with demon-echoes from your past;
If they’re still there when in such scenes you’re cast,
You’ll yield to them and buckle to the stress,
And find some way to save your pretty neck.

In Judas’ case, who knows what happened when;
It seems that Jesus knew, as He was friend,
And understood that somewhere up ahead,
Those demons he would face – when Christ was dead.

And so the final act got underway;
Out into darkness Judas went, and stayed
Away from light – just torch-light of the script
Isaiah wrote – torment as from his lip.

Thanks Lord for this.
